RE: Koko very ill (6/23 Koko passed)

So sorry for your loss, truly I am. Know that you did everything possible and that Koko knew that and loved you for it. She is spreading love and joy with those loved ones we have lost.

RE: Anyone Use The Gentle Leader?

Wow, everyone has a different opinion on this subject. However, based on the variety of responses, from helpful to snarky, I would guess that every dog responds differently to certain methods of training. To those of you that hold yourselves in such high esteem while walking your highly trained dogs at a heel on a loose leash, congratulations. For the rest of us who are still training their dogs, different methods work for different dogs. I used the gentle leader on my rescue corgi, he pulled horribly. I used the gentle leader for about four months until I could get him more focused on me and not dragging me down the sidewalk. Now I walk him in a no slip collar and I make him walk by my side. He's on a loose leash about 75% of the time, the other times, I'm reminding him to do so. I also used the cesar milan walking collar which keeps the nylon choke collar up high on his neck and walked him at my side. I truly believe the key to success in walking a dog at your side on a loose leash is to keep them at your side at all times. You don't need to jerk them around or turn sharply to keep their attention on you. I use treats alot. When he is walking at my side nicely, he gets praised and a treat. Not all the time, but sporadically thru out our walk, he gets a treat. Keeps his attention on me. If he lunges ahead, he gets a tight collar for a second and pushed back with my ankle. or I stop and make him sit. Then start again. I can say that I can now walk him for two miles on a loose leash and not have a problem. But it is still not second nature to him, he would rather run like a mad man. And I also walk him on a retractable leash... imagine the horror of it all. He walks nicely at my side until I release him with an "ok" and then he gets to run and play and sniff all the good smells that the horse trails have to offer. Again people, everyone has a method that works for them. The original poster asked for advice on gentle leaders.. the answer is yes, the gentle leader does work wonderfully for some dogs. I don't think they asked for a nasty retort or a holier than thou attitude from those of you who are perfect in every way.

RE: Should our Golden Retriever go with us camping?

DO NOT LEAVE your poor dog tied up outside at night!! Good grief.. how would you feel if you were left outside alone in the dark in a strange place, not to mention some roving critter could attack him. If he is not a full fledged member of your family, why have him at all. I don't understand why you have him outside at your home either. Of course he loves sitting by the family, he's outside by himself most of the time. Dogs are very social animals and being kept outside and not with the family is torture for them. It's no wonder he's destructive. Why can't he come in the house and be with the family on a regular basis? I can't understand people who have a dog sitting outside looking in at them all the time.... the dog wants nothing more than to be with you... If the dog is not going to be allowed inside the rig during the day or at night, leave the poor thing at home, at least he is familiar with that.

RE: Whats your routine?

We have everything in the mh, however, clothes go in the nite before. I make a menu from which I make grocery list and a "take" list of food items from the house. As we carry out to the mh, it gets crossed off the list. Then I have a "dog" bag for all their stuff. We also have a designated corner in the spare room where "mh stuff" goes. That will consist of anything that goes in the mh next trip, i.e., books, magazines, the clean towels, sheets, new gadgets, etc. that way we are not looking around. If it goes in the mh, it goes in that spot, that way whoever loads the mh knows to look there and get it in the mh. We've been camping for about 10 or 11 yrs now, so we have just about everything we need and then some in the mh. Happy camping!!

RE: Pembroke Welsh Corgi questions

I have two pembrokes, red headed tri colored, one female and one male. I love these dogs. They are a herding breed, so very active, love to do just about anything. They do bark, but not needlessly. Once the "threat" is gone, they stop barking. They love to be with you, they are cuddlebugs, they can jump in our laps and on the sofas. They need exercise, but they do not have that nervous, anxious nonstop type of energy. They play hard, but do get tired. I can't say enough good things about them. They are a big dog in a small package. They don't have a small dog bark though, half the time people think I've got a german shepherd in the car and are surprised to see the short leggers coming out of the truck! They do shed, they have the soft undercoat that comes out quite a bit. I brush and bathe them on a regular basis to keep it under control. Both of mine are purebred rescues. I would recommend looking at Petfinder.com and searching for corgis in your zip code. A list will come up with corgi mixes and purebreds. You can then contact the local rescue groups in your area and go from there. Good luck with your search and thank you in advance for rescuing a pembroke! You won't regret it!

RE: LA to Yellowstone

We left for grand tetons on a thurs nite, made it to stateline that night. Left early the next morning and made it to salt lake city. From there we went into Jackson hole. Leaving on thurs nite was nice cause we were able to beat the heat both thurs nite and then fri morning.

RE: UPDATE: Has anyone had experience with Temaril P or low dose

I have my female corgi on temaril p for a while now. She only gets 1 pill 3 x's a week. I give her benadryl twice a day on the days she doesn't get the temaril. I also now have her on omega 3 rich diet, I give her pinnacle trout & sweet potato formula, both dry & canned. Very high in fish oil. I have to say after being on this diet for about a year, I have never seen her coat so beautiful and shiny. She has not had a hot spot in over a year. I also bathe her with a vet recommended anti-bacterial/anti-fungal shampoo about 2 - 4 times a month. It seems to calm down any itchiness. I'm going to try and wean her off the temaril now that she is on this diet. We'll see. Just some things to think about to try and help your furkid!

RE: Are you camping Memorial Day Weekend and where?

zmotorsports - nobody from the west is posting any comments cause unless you made reservations 7 months ago you are not going anywhere! In calif it's too hot to go anywhere inland, i.e., 20 miles from the ocean, unless you are in the mountains. Everyone knows that, so memorial weekend is booked up way early. With that being said, we are going to paso robles for memorial weekend for a little wine tasting and then over to morro bay the following wednesday thru the following weekend. Happy camping everyone... enjoy

RE: making arrangements for beloved pets

sharrlan - i meant to end my post with how sorry I am about your loss and that you are to be commended for doing the right thing by your brother's dogs. My computer shut me down before I could finish the post, so I apologize if my post seemed judgmental towards you, it was not. Just a general observation from what I see through various rescue groups and the dogs they rescue from the pound.

RE: making arrangements for beloved pets

It always amazes me that when a loved one dies, their pet ends up in the pound. I understand that alot of people don't have the means or facilities to care for the animal, but I think it is so disrespectful to that person to take their cherished animal to the pound. The animal has no idea what's going and is grieving for their person and then shipped off to the pound. I just can't imagine. We have understandings with all our friends about our animals that we will take each other's animals and if can't, then contact a rescue group and make arrangements for them to find a good home.

RE: Know any millionaires?

Yes, one of my mom's friends is worth millions, but you would never know it. Shops at big lots and jc penny. Bought a used cadillac, but doesn't drive it much, drives a 70's vintage little datsun pickup truck. Lives in the same house she's had for 30+ years. She goes on cruises once in a while and she is the nicest most fun loving person I know. Always sends dh and myself birthday cards. She grew up dirt poor, 1st husband left her with 5 kids, put herself thru nursing school, raised those kids. 2nd husband and her invested in real estate and that's how she came to be so wealthy now.

RE: Horseback riding in Yosemite

There is a stable right in the valley that has guided trail rides. Also I believe there is a stable in tuolome meadows. The stable in the valley is close to the campgrounds and we rode our bikes to it. Even if it is sunny, bring a jacket. We got to the top of vernal falls, looked behind us and a huge black cloud came up over the hill bringing hail! It hailed on us until we got to a lower elevation, then it was just pouring rain. Never been so cold in my life, but I would do it again. Great trails to ride on!

RE: Lake Skinner Mosquitos???

Not sure where you could go that has fishing, but Vail Lake in Temecula is a nice campground, kinda pricey though. You can shore fish on their private lake, but you have to drive to it.

RE: How to plain a trip?

If we are planning a "big" trip, more than a week and moving around to different places we've never been before, we start with a map of the state we are going to. Look at the routes, plan a days drive, look in trailer life directory to see if any campgrounds in that area, if not, do a little more research. We plan each stop, make a reservation for each night and will have the entire trip planned out. But we live in calif where if you don't have a reservation, you are out of luck. We will never go anywhere without a reservation having learned that lesson the hard way. We take a main highway because usually we are pressed for time to get to the stop for the night. We like to stop by around 5 at the latest. We are not retired and every precious moment of vacation time is utilized. Once at our destination, then it's time to relax.

RE: The serenity of Camping

I agree - camping is such a great "get away from it all" experience. As soon as we get in the mh, settle in and hit the road... ahhhh peace at long last (well, when we finally get out of the los angeles traffic I should say). My co-workers ( who don't camp) always ask me, what do you do all day? Well, I tell them, I wake up, take the dogs on a nice long morning walk, come back, sit and have a couple cups of coffee, then take a shower. Then, oh my look at the time, it's almost lunch time. Have lunch, walk the dogs again, take a nap, read a book, then get up, get out the happy hour munchies and beverages, fix dinner, eat dinner, sit by the fire, then go to bed. That's the relaxing way to spend a day in my mind.

RE: Kitchen / Tableware - Little Efficiencies...

I use corelle dishes if we have steak or something a little tougher to cut, but otherwise paper plates. My handy hint is to use rubbermaid storage containers to hold spice jars, and little items in your pantry or cabinets. Also, cooking oils, unopened salad dressings, etc., get put into a plastic bag and then into a rubbermaid container. No messy residue that way. I put just about everything messy if breaks into a rubbermaid container to make clean up a breeze if things do break. Target has little white trays with rubber that i use for small stuff in drawers.
